Start with the application brief
For beverage, confectionery, jam and powdered-drink projects, provide food type, pH range, target shade, clarity and process temperature before requesting a sample. Include sugar/acid/salt conditions, packaging, destination market and planned storage. A source name and desired red or purple shade do not fully specify the sample needed.
What supplier information must distinguish
Botanical source, extract identity and standardization can differ even when source labels look similar. Powder, liquid, sugar-based or other carriers change dissolution, pre-dispersion and addition routes. Color value, anthocyanin content and loss-on-drying figures need their analytical methods and units; numbers on a package are not directly comparable.
Obtain batch number, specification, COA, methods, storage and shelf-life information that correspond to the actual sample. Ask for stock preparation and recommended addition point. A COA describes batch evidence; it cannot alone establish the full specification, application suitability or market status.
Six groups of inquiry fields
- Source: botanical and extract identity, complete product name.
- Carrier: composition, form and dispersion/dissolution route.
- Indicators: standardization basis, reported values and methods.
- Batch: sample identification, matching specification and COA, storage/expiry data.
- Process: stock preparation, mixing, addition point and heat exposure.
- Market review: destination, food category and information needed by the responsible regulatory team.
Minimum sample comparison
- A: current candidate using its supplier-recommended route.
- B: a different carrier specification from the same source.
- C: another source specification matched to the target color depth.
- D: uncolored actual food base.
- Hold target depth, pH, temperature and observation timing consistent. Record dispersion, color, haze, sediment and storage changes.
Read the results in context
Do not compare powder appearance as the final selection criterion or use equal powder weight as a substitute for target color depth. The same botanical source can come with different concentration and handling requirements. Record actual addition amount, mixing, heating and stored appearance in the real base.
An incompletely documented sample can remain an exploratory trial if clearly marked; its result cannot become a verified specification, regulatory or shelf-life conclusion. Keep specification selection, formula validation and market review separate, and request the missing records before further assessment.
Before commercial use
Confirm the exact product through supplier documentation, real-formula trials, pilot and shelf-life validation, and destination-market review. Process settings and use levels depend on that assessment.
