Beta-carotene is used to develop yellow to orange-yellow shades. Choose beta-carotene by the phase it will enter and the finished appearance you need. Powder, liquid/emulsion and oil-soluble/oil-suspended specifications have different handling and validation requirements.

Match the product form to the addition route
- Liquid or emulsion: mix thoroughly before use and follow a validated liquid-phase addition sequence. Check emulsion compatibility, cloudiness, separation and storage.
- Powder: establish a pre-dispersion step before dosing into a complex base. Check visible particles, specks, cloudiness and sediment.
- Oil-soluble or oil-suspended: first mix into a compatible oil phase, then incorporate through the intended process. Check creaming, wall deposits and separation.
Define appearance before comparing samples
Clear, lightly cloudy, opaque and oil-based products place different demands on the carrier and dispersion. For beverages, compare powders and emulsions at a similar target color depth, with the actual mixing and heat treatment. Equal addition weight does not make different concentrations and carriers equivalent.
Process and formulation checks
Light, oxygen, heat history and packaging influence color retention. Acid, salt, sugar, hydrocolloids, flavor emulsions and the oil phase can alter interfaces or perceived color. Homogenization intensity and hydrocolloid use must suit the continuous phase and specification.
In dairy and composite foods, separate the effects of protein, fat, hydrocolloids and heat. For confectionery and bakery, fix pre-dispersion, heating and cooling conditions before comparing final shade and storage appearance.

- Particles, specks, unexpected haze or sediment in the water phase.
- Surface oil rings, floating oil or color deposited on the bottle wall.
- Separation, coalescence or color change after temperature cycling and storage.
