Beverage fading checklist: formula to packaging
Retain the right samples, then isolate the process and exposure variables instead of repeatedly changing candidates.

1. Define the problem
Record initial shade, first fading time, hue shift, sediment, clear-bottle specificity and recovery after shaking. Retain an uncolored blank, target sample, faded sample and comparable unfaded sample.
2. Separate formula variables
Check pH, acidulants, vitamin C, juice concentrate, tea, hydrocolloids, flavor emulsions, minerals and sweeteners. Complex bases benefit from blank and individual-addition comparisons.
3. Separate processing variables
Compare before/after heating, relevant temperatures, holding, cooling and color addition order. Record actual time and temperature rather than saying only “heated.” Limit each trial to one or two clearly identified variables.
4. Separate packaging and shelf variables
Clear and protected bottles, headspace, filling temperature, ambient display, refrigeration and strong light can change the result. Use conditions close to the actual package and shelf environment for the final assessment.
Choose the next sample from the evidence
A different color may help, but repeated sample changes can repeat failure if pH, heat, oxygen, light or vitamin C remains unidentified. Preserve sample IDs and observations so each new comparison answers a specific question. Confirm the final specification, formula and market review separately.
